Surveyor Data

A Crosswalk To The Standard

The left column of the table below contains a sampling of the kind of information collected by surveyors.  Note that this is not a comprehensive list.   Depending on the kind of survey being conducted, additional information might be included.

The right column contains the Cadastral Data Content Standard entity and attribute which corresponds to the surveying data in the the left column.

Overall, the table lists many potential connections between commonly used surveying data and the FGDC Cadastral Data Content Standard.  This represents numerous links, key terms, or relate items --- in other words, a wealth of capability not only to work with standardized definitions but to use these definitions as understandable links between multiple agencies and varying databases.

Notes:
(1) Though the Standard's Legal Area Description entity does not provide explicitly for legal descriptions, it does provide the structure for assembling the components of a single legal description into one.
(2) Parcel, lot, and block could also pertain to Survey System Division entities in the Standard, depending on the actual division of land occurring in the survey.

The table above illustrates that:

  1. The Cadastral Data Content Standard offers a significant range of definitions and terminology for data commonly used by surveyors.
  2. There may be attributes in the Standard which some surveyors may not use, such as Outer Continental Shelf Description, or Parcel Transaction.
  3. Likewise, there are likely to be elements in your data which have no correspondence with the Standard, such as history of the survey and certificate of survey.
  4. Surveyors can make use of many of the Cadastral Standard's attributes to link data with other departments, with County, State, and Federal agencies, and with businesses which deal with cadastral information.
The Cadastral Data Content Standard entities from the table above can be seen illustrated and highlighted in diagram form.
