Learning the Cadastral Data Content Standard

Introduction



This is the on-line education site for learning about the uses and benefits of the Cadastral Data Content Standard.  This main course consists of eight sections about the Standard.  The introduction to these eight sections begins below.

Introduction

Through this site, you will discover information which will guide you to an understanding of the uses and benefits of the Cadastral Data Content Standard. The objectives are to: This should assist those who will be using the Standard in developing a physical design for their data. While anyone can take this course, the course is designed primarily for: This course address many topics pertaining to the Cadastral Data Content Standard.  To look up specific topics, go to the Quick Reference - Index to Topics.


The course is into two major divisions, consisting of the Overview Sections and the Technical Sections, as follows:

Overview Sections

Section One: Purpose and Benefits of the Cadastral Data Content Standard describes the benefits and intended uses of the Cadastral Data Content Standard, as well as when to standardize, and what it takes to standardize.

Section Two: How the Standard Was Developed discusses the history and development of the Cadastral Data Content Standard, and includes a description of the Standard.

Section Three: Other Standards and Related Activities gives examples of other existing standards and emerging standards, and their potential relationship to the Cadastral Data Content Standard.
 

Technical Sections

Section Four: Data Modeling Techniques, Rules, and Diagram Conventions describes the entity relationship diagram and the definitions and relationships used in the Cadastral Data Content Standard, clarifying the data modeling conventions used in the Standard's logical model.

Section Five: Crosswalks, Translations, and Examples describes practical uses of the Standard, and includes examples of two ways of using the Standard: Crosswalks, and Translations.

Section Six: Understanding Compliance with the Standard describes what it means for data to be in compliance with the Standard.

Section Seven: Maintenance of the Standard describes current information on how to propose and track changes to the Cadastral Data Content Standard.

Section Eight: User and Technical Support describes current information on how to get answers to questions about the Cadastral Data Content Standard and about the educational materials contained here.

Also included is a Glossary.  The Glossary is a list of cadastral and data modeling terms which apply to the general subjects addressed in this educational site. A list of acronyms is included.

To get started, we recommend you begin with the Section 1: Purpose and Benefits of the Cadastral Data Content Standard, and then proceed in order through the remaining Sections. However, for those who want to move directly to specific topics, links to course Sections are provided on each page.

To complete these Sections, you will need access to a copy of the Cadastral Data Content Standard. Go to the Fairview Industries site where you can download a copy of the Standard. In addition, we have provided a view of the Standard's logical model entity-relationship diagram, and a list of definitions which you will need regularly throughout this course.


Though this course includes some basic information on data models, it does not explain the process of modeling data. For information on data modeling which goes beyond the scope of this course, look for the references in Section Four, Data Modeling Techniques, Rules and Diagram Conventions.
