Dane County Soils Coverage

Dane County Example

The corporate representative goes to the Dane County offices, and finds the office where county soil maps are maintained. Having previously viewed his general map of the area, the representative knows the Range, Township, and Sections where the parcel is located.

Unfortunately, the clerk at the desk asks the corporate representative for the Sheet Number that covers the area of interest. The representative does not know anything about Sheet Numbers, but gives the clerk the Range, Township and Section numbers already known. With this information, the clerk can fairly quickly refer to a locator map in the office, find the Sheet Number for the the area of interest, and provide the appropriate soils coverage.

This illustrates that by having a common reference, people operating from differing orientations can begin to share information more efficiently. The common references in this case are the Range, Township, and Section designations, which are attributes in the Cadastral Data Content Standard.

The coverage pictured below, and the following table, show the soils map and the information from the map which correspond to entities in the Cadastral Data Content Standard.

From Dane County Sheet Number 76, Scale 1:15,840. Soils in the area being considered for purchase include primarily BoD2 - Boyer Sandy Loam, 12% to 20% slopes, eroded, and some adjacent Wa - Wacousta silty clay loam.

From the soils map above it is possible to find information which directly crosswalks to entities and attributes in the Cadastral Data Content Standard. "R8E" is found at the top of the map above. "T7N" and "County" are not pictured on the small subsection of the soils map shown above, but can be found on the original full sized map.
