Data Integration, Standards, and Modernizing Land Information

- More About The Cadastral Data Content Standard -

The use of information standards, or data standards, is a critically important step allowing us to take advantage of the information technologies we have available to us.

Land records and cadastral information comprise massive and complex sets of data which describe the location, extent, and rights and interests in land.  As illustrated in the above land purchase scenario, land record data sets are often recorded and stored differently from one office to the next, making the clarification of rights and interests, land uses, and taxes much more difficult than it should be.

The Cadastral Data Content Standard provides definitions and organized descriptions of relationships between elements of cadastral information.  The mission of the Standard is:

“To provide a standard for the definition and structure for cadastral data which will facilitate data sharing at all levels of government and the private sector and will protect and enhance the investments in cadastral data at all levels of government and the private sector.”  (From the Cadastral Data Content Standard, p. 2.)

The Cadastral Data Content Standard allows us to understand and communicate cadastral information more clearly.  Standardized information is conveyed faster, and is much more easily understood across public and private agencies, across administrative boundaries, and by individuals and community organizations.  In the big picture, use of the Standard is an essential part of assuring we will be able to manage land transactions, and maintain and manage livable communities into the future.
